
Churchhill Downs
The most famous thoroughbred race track in the world, Churchill Downs, is situated in south Louisville, Kentucky. The track is most well known for hosting the annual races of the Kentucky Derby and the Kentucky Oaks.
The track attracts thoroughbred horses, their trainers and jockeys from all over North America and the world every year to compete in the most prestigious race for the top three-year-olds. The track has hosted the Breeders’ Cup World Thoroughbred Championships
Churchill Downs Track Information
Churchill Downs has been open as a race track since 1875 and covers an area of 147 acres. The Derby is run on a dirt oval main track, which is one mile in circumference. There is a turf track also, which is inside the main track, is 7/8 of a mile (1.4 km) in circumference.
The Kentucky Derby is takes place first Saturday in May and the Kentucky Oaks is run on Friday, the day before the Derby. A fall meet commences in late October and closes Thanksgiving weekend in late November.
